For years, police have utilized a somewhat controversial method for apprehending cars that are driving away from them: driving behind them as fast as possible. Despite decades of advancement in other areas of policing, they’ve decided that the best way to apprehend a speeding car is by following it with their own speeding car, a move that has killed hundreds of innocent people.

Now, however, it appears those days may be coming to an end. That’s because police around the country are employing something called a “grappler,” which allows them to basically lasso a car if it gets close enough to them. Here’s how it works and what it looks like in action.
